1亚伯兰的妻子撒莱不给他生儿女。撒莱有一个，名叫夏甲，是埃及人。Now Abram’s wife Sarai had borne him no children, but she had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar.
2撒莱对亚伯兰说：“耶和华使我不能生育。求你和我的使女同房，或者我可以因她得孩子（得孩子：原文是被建立）”。亚伯兰听从了撒莱的话。So Sarai said to Abram, “Look now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go to my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
3于是亚伯兰的妻子撒莱将使女埃及人夏甲给了丈夫为妾；那时亚伯兰在迦南已经住了十年。So after he had lived in Canaan for ten years, his wife Sarai took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to Abram to be his wife.
4亚伯兰与夏甲同房，夏甲就怀了孕；她见自己有孕，就小看她的主母。And he slept with Hagar, and she conceived. But when Hagar realized that she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.
5撒莱对亚伯兰说：“我因你受屈。我将我的使女放在你怀中，她见自己有了孕，就小看我。愿耶和华在你我中间判断。”Then Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be upon you! I delivered my servant into your arms, and ever since she saw that she was pregnant, she has treated me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me.”
6亚伯兰对撒莱说：“使女在你手下，你可以随意待她。”撒莱苦待她，她就从撒莱面前逃走了。“Here,” said Abram, “your servant is in your hands. Do whatever you want with her.” Then Sarai treated Hagar so harshly that she fled from her.
7耶和华的使者在旷野书珥路上的水泉旁遇见她，Now the angel of the LORD found Hagar by a spring of water in the desert—the spring along the road to Shur.
8对她说：“撒莱的使女夏甲，你从哪里来？要往哪里去？”夏甲说：“我从我的主母撒莱面前逃出来。”“Hagar, servant of Sarai,” he said, “where have you come from, and where are you going?” “I am running away from my mistress Sarai,” she replied.
9耶和华的使者对她说：“你回到你主母那里，服在她手下”；So the angel of the LORD told her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her authority.”
10又说：“我必使你的后裔极其繁多，甚至不可胜数”；Then the angel added, “I will greatly multiply your offspring so that they will be too numerous to count.”
11并说：“你如今怀孕要生一个儿子，可以给他起名叫（就是神听见的意思），因为耶和华听见了你的苦情。The angel of the LORD proceeded: “Behold, you have conceived and will bear a son. And you shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of affliction.
12他为人必像。他的手要攻打人，人的手也要攻打他；他必住在众弟兄的东边。”He will be a wild donkey of a man, and his hand will be against everyone, and everyone’s hand against him; he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.”
13夏甲就称那对她说话的耶和华为“看顾人的 神”。因而说：“在这里我也看见那看顾我的吗？”So Hagar gave this name to the LORD who had spoken to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “Here I have seen the One who sees me!”
14所以这井名叫庇耳·拉海·莱。这井正在加低斯和巴列中间。Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi. It is located between Kadesh and Bered.
15后来夏甲给亚伯兰生了一个儿子；亚伯兰给他起名叫以实玛利。And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne.
16夏甲给亚伯兰生以实玛利的时候，亚伯兰年八十六岁。Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him.
