神要的不是表面的敬拜，而是公平和公义。
阿摩司本来是南国的牧人和修理桑树的人，神却差他到北国以色列传讲信息。当时北国经济繁荣，富人却欺压穷人，一面行不义，一面热心献祭。阿摩司宣告神厌恶这种虚假的敬拜，要“惟愿公平如大水滚滚，使公义如江河滔滔”。书的最后应许神要重建大卫倒塌的帐幕。

1当犹大王乌西雅，以色列王约阿施的儿子耶罗波安在位的时候，大地震前二年，牧人中的阿摩司得论以色列。These are the words of Amos, who was among the sheepherders of Tekoa—what he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, in the days when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel.
2他说：耶和华必从锡安吼叫，从耶路撒冷发声；牧人的草场要悲哀；迦密的山顶要枯干。He said: “The LORD roars from Zion and raises His voice from Jerusalem; the pastures of the shepherds mourn, and the summit of Carmel withers.”
3耶和华如此说：地犯罪，我必不免去她的刑罚；因为她以打过基列。This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Damascus, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they threshed Gilead with sledges of iron.
4我却要降火在哈薛的家中，烧灭的宫殿。So I will send fire upon the house of Hazael to consume the citadels of Ben-hadad.
5我必折断大马士革的，剪除亚文平原的居民和伯·伊甸掌权的。亚兰人必被掳到吉珥。这是耶和华说的。I will break down the gates of Damascus; I will cut off the ruler from the Valley of Aven and the one who wields the scepter in Beth-eden. The people of Aram will be exiled to Kir,” says the LORD.
6耶和华如此说：三番四次地犯罪，我必不免去她的刑罚；因为她掳掠众民交给以东。This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Gaza, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they exiled a whole population, delivering them up to Edom.
7我却要降火在迦萨的城内，烧灭其中的宫殿。So I will send fire upon the walls of Gaza, to consume its citadels.
8我必剪除亚实突的居民和亚实基伦掌权的，也必反手攻击以革伦。非利士人所余剩的必都灭亡。这是主耶和华说的。I will cut off the ruler of Ashdod and the one who wields the scepter in Ashkelon. I will turn My hand against Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines will perish,” says the Lord GOD.
9耶和华如此说：泰尔三番四次地犯罪，我必不免去她的刑罚；因为她将众民交给以东，并不记念。This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Tyre, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they delivered up a whole congregation of exiles to Edom and broke a covenant of brotherhood.
10我却要降火在泰尔的城内，烧灭其中的宫殿。So I will send fire upon the walls of Tyre to consume its citadels.”
11耶和华如此说：三番四次地犯罪，我必不免去她的刑罚；因为她拿刀追赶兄弟，毫无怜悯，发怒撕裂，永怀忿怒。This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Edom, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because he pursued his brother with the sword and stifled all compassion; his anger raged continually, and his fury flamed incessantly.
12我却要降火在提幔，烧灭波斯拉的宫殿。So I will send fire upon Teman to consume the citadels of Bozrah.”
13耶和华如此说：亚扪人三番四次地犯罪，我必不免去他们的刑罚；因为他们剖开基列的孕妇，扩张自己的境界。This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of the Ammonites, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead in order to enlarge their territory.
14我却要在争战呐喊的日子，旋风狂暴的时候，点火在拉巴的城内，烧灭其中的宫殿。So I will kindle a fire in the walls of Rabbah to consume its citadels amid war cries on the day of battle and a violent wind on the day of tempest.
15他们的王和首领必一同被掳去。这是耶和华说的。Their king will go into exile—he and his princes together,” says the LORD.
