1以撒叫了雅各來，給他祝福，並囑咐他說：「你不要娶迦南的女子為妻。So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. “Do not take a wife from the Canaanite women,” he commanded.
2你起身往巴旦‧亞蘭去，到你外祖彼土利家裡，在你拉班的女兒中娶一女為妻。“Go at once to Paddan-aram, to the house of your mother’s father Bethuel, and take a wife from among the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.
3願全能的 神賜福給你，使你生養眾多，成為多族，May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, so that you may become a company of peoples.
4將應許亞伯拉罕的福賜給你和你的後裔，使你承受你所寄居的地為業，就是 神賜給亞伯拉罕的地。」And may He give the blessing of Abraham to you and your descendants, so that you may possess the land where you dwell as a foreigner, the land God gave to Abraham.”
5以撒打發雅各走了，他就往巴旦‧亞蘭去，到亞蘭人彼土利的兒子拉班那裡。拉班是雅各、以掃的母舅。So Isaac sent Jacob to Paddan-aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.
6以掃見以撒已經給雅各祝福，而且打發他往巴旦‧亞蘭去，在那裡娶妻，並見祝福的時候囑咐他說：「不要娶迦南的女子為妻」，Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him to Paddan-aram to take a wife there, commanding him, “Do not marry a Canaanite woman,”
7又見雅各聽從父母的話往巴旦‧亞蘭去了，and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and gone to Paddan-aram.
8以掃就曉得他父親以撒看不中迦南的女子，And seeing that his father Isaac disapproved of the Canaanite women,
9便往以實瑪利那裡去，在他二妻之外又娶了瑪哈拉為妻。她是亞伯拉罕兒子以實瑪利的女兒，尼拜約的妹子。Esau went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Abraham’s son Ishmael, in addition to the wives he already had.
10雅各出了別是巴，向哈蘭走去；Meanwhile Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran.
11到了一個地方，因為太陽落了，就在那裡住宿，便拾起那地方的一塊石頭枕在頭下，在那裡躺臥睡了，On reaching a certain place, he spent the night there because the sun had set. And taking one of the stones from that place, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.
12夢見一個立在地上，梯子的頭頂著天，有 神的使者在梯子上，上去下來。And Jacob had a dream about a ladder that rested on the earth with its top reaching up to heaven, and God’s angels were going up and down the ladder.
13耶和華站在梯子以上（或譯：站在他旁邊），說：「我是耶和華─你祖亞伯拉罕的 神，也是以撒的 神；我要將你現在所躺臥之地賜給你和你的後裔。And there at the top the LORD was standing and saying, “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you now lie.
14你的後裔必像地上的塵沙那樣多，必向東西南北開展；地上萬族必因你和你的後裔得福。Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and east and north and south. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.
15我也與你同在。你無論往哪裡去，我必保佑你，領你歸回這地，總不離棄你，直到我成全了向你所應許的。」Look, I am with you, and I will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
16雅各睡醒了，說：「耶和華真在這裡，我竟不知道！」When Jacob woke up, he said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was unaware of it.”
17就懼怕，說：「這地方何等！這不是別的，乃是 神的殿，也是天的門。」And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven!”
18雅各清早起來，把所枕的石頭立作，在上面。Early the next morning, Jacob took the stone that he had placed under his head, and he set it up as a pillar. He poured oil on top of it,
19他就給那地方起名叫伯特利（就是 神殿的意思）；但那地方起先名叫。and he called that place Bethel, though previously the city had been named Luz.
20雅各許願說：「 神若與我同在，在我所行的路上保佑我，又給我食物吃，衣服穿，Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and watch over me on this journey, and if He will provide me with food to eat and clothes to wear,
21使我平平安安地回到我父親的家，我就必以耶和華為我的 神。so that I may return safely to my father’s house, then the LORD will be my God.
22我所立為柱子的石頭也必作 神的殿；凡你所賜給我的，我必將十分之一獻給你。」And this stone I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give You a tenth.”
