1亞伯蘭的妻子撒萊不給他生兒女。撒萊有一個，名叫夏甲，是埃及人。Now Abram’s wife Sarai had borne him no children, but she had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar.
2撒萊對亞伯蘭說：「耶和華使我不能生育。求你和我的使女同房，或者我可以因她得孩子（得孩子：原文是被建立）」。亞伯蘭聽從了撒萊的話。So Sarai said to Abram, “Look now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go to my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
3於是亞伯蘭的妻子撒萊將使女埃及人夏甲給了丈夫為妾；那時亞伯蘭在迦南已經住了十年。So after he had lived in Canaan for ten years, his wife Sarai took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to Abram to be his wife.
4亞伯蘭與夏甲同房，夏甲就懷了孕；她見自己有孕，就小看她的主母。And he slept with Hagar, and she conceived. But when Hagar realized that she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.
5撒萊對亞伯蘭說：「我因你受屈。我將我的使女放在你懷中，她見自己有了孕，就小看我。願耶和華在你我中間判斷。」Then Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be upon you! I delivered my servant into your arms, and ever since she saw that she was pregnant, she has treated me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me.”
6亞伯蘭對撒萊說：「使女在你手下，你可以隨意待她。」撒萊苦待她，她就從撒萊面前逃走了。“Here,” said Abram, “your servant is in your hands. Do whatever you want with her.” Then Sarai treated Hagar so harshly that she fled from her.
7耶和華的使者在曠野書珥路上的水泉旁遇見她，Now the angel of the LORD found Hagar by a spring of water in the desert—the spring along the road to Shur.
8對她說：「撒萊的使女夏甲，你從哪裡來？要往哪裡去？」夏甲說：「我從我的主母撒萊面前逃出來。」“Hagar, servant of Sarai,” he said, “where have you come from, and where are you going?” “I am running away from my mistress Sarai,” she replied.
9耶和華的使者對她說：「你回到你主母那裡，服在她手下」；So the angel of the LORD told her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her authority.”
10又說：「我必使你的後裔極其繁多，甚至不可勝數」；Then the angel added, “I will greatly multiply your offspring so that they will be too numerous to count.”
11並說：「你如今懷孕要生一個兒子，可以給他起名叫（就是神聽見的意思），因為耶和華聽見了你的苦情。The angel of the LORD proceeded: “Behold, you have conceived and will bear a son. And you shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of affliction.
12他為人必像。他的手要攻打人，人的手也要攻打他；他必住在眾弟兄的東邊。」He will be a wild donkey of a man, and his hand will be against everyone, and everyone’s hand against him; he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.”
13夏甲就稱那對她說話的耶和華為「看顧人的 神」。因而說：「在這裡我也看見那看顧我的嗎？」So Hagar gave this name to the LORD who had spoken to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “Here I have seen the One who sees me!”
14所以這井名叫庇耳‧拉海‧萊。這井正在加低斯和巴列中間。Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi. It is located between Kadesh and Bered.
15後來夏甲給亞伯蘭生了一個兒子；亞伯蘭給他起名叫以實瑪利。And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne.
16夏甲給亞伯蘭生以實瑪利的時候，亞伯蘭年八十六歲。Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him.
