1有一個利未家的人娶了一個利未女子為妻。Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman,
2那女人懷孕，生一個兒子，見他俊美，就藏了他三個月，and she conceived and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him for three months.
3後來不能再藏，就取了一個，抹上，將孩子放在裡頭，把箱子擱在河邊的蘆荻中。But when she could no longer hide him, she got him a papyrus basket and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in the basket and set it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.
4孩子的姊姊遠遠站著，要知道他究竟怎麼樣。And his sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.
5法老的女兒來到河邊洗澡，她的使女們在河邊行走。她看見箱子在蘆荻中，就打發一個婢女拿來。Soon the daughter of Pharaoh went down to bathe in the Nile, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. And when she saw the basket among the reeds, she sent her maidservant to retrieve it.
6她打開箱子，看見那孩子。孩子哭了，她就可憐他，說：「這是希伯來人的一個孩子。」When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the little boy was crying. So she had compassion on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrew children.”
7孩子的姊姊對法老的女兒說：「我去在希伯來婦人中叫一個奶媽來，為你奶這孩子，可以不可以？」Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call one of the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?”
8法老的女兒說：「可以。」童女就去叫了孩子的母親來。“Go ahead,” Pharaoh’s daughter told her. And the girl went and called the boy’s mother.
9法老的女兒對她說：「你把這孩子抱去，為我奶他，我必給你工價。」婦人就抱了孩子去奶他。Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child and nurse him for me, and I will pay your wages.” So the woman took the boy and nursed him.
10孩子漸長，婦人把他帶到法老的女兒那裡，就作了她的兒子。她給孩子起名叫，意思說：「因我把他從水裡拉出來。」When the child had grown older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses and explained, “I drew him out of the water.”
11後來，摩西長大，他出去到他弟兄那裡，看他們的重擔，見一個埃及人打希伯來人的一個弟兄。One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to his own people and observed their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people.
12他左右觀看，見沒有人，就把埃及人打死了，藏在沙土裡。After looking this way and that and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and hid his body in the sand.
13第二天他出去，見有兩個希伯來人爭鬥，就對那欺負人的說：「你為甚麼打你同族的人呢？」The next day Moses went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you attacking your companion?”
14那人說：「誰立你作我們的首領和審判官呢？難道你要殺我，像殺那埃及人嗎？」摩西便懼怕，說：「這事必是被人知道了。」But the man replied, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you planning to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “This thing I have done has surely become known.”
15法老聽見這事，就想殺摩西，但摩西躲避法老，逃往地居住。When Pharaoh heard about this matter, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian, where he sat down beside a well.
16一日，他在井旁坐下。米甸的祭司有七個女兒；她們來打水，打滿了槽，要飲父親的群羊。Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came to draw water and fill the troughs to water their father’s flock.
17有牧羊的人來，把她們趕走了，摩西卻起來幫助她們，又飲了她們的群羊。And when some shepherds came along and drove them away, Moses rose up to help them and watered their flock.
18她們來到父親流珥那裡；他說：「今日你們為何來得這麼快呢？」When the daughters returned to their father Reuel, he asked them, “Why have you returned so early today?”
19她們說：「有一個埃及人救我們脫離牧羊人的手，並且為我們打水飲了群羊。」“An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds,” they replied. “He even drew water for us and watered the flock.”
20他對女兒們說：「那個人在哪裡？你們為甚麼撇下他呢？你們去請他來吃飯。」“So where is he?” their father asked. “Why did you leave the man behind? Invite him to have something to eat.”
21摩西甘心和那人同住；那人把他的女兒西坡拉給摩西為妻。Moses agreed to stay with the man, and he gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage.
22西坡拉生了一個兒子，摩西給他起名叫革舜，意思說：「因我在外邦作了寄居的。」And she gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom, saying, “I have become a foreigner in a foreign land.”
23過了多年，埃及王死了。以色列人因做苦工，就歎息哀求，他們的哀聲達於 神。After a long time, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned and cried out under their burden of slavery, and their cry for deliverance from bondage ascended to God.
24神聽見他們的哀聲，就記念他與亞伯拉罕、以撒、雅各所立的約。So God heard their groaning, and He remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
25神看顧以色列人，也知道他們的苦情。God saw the Israelites and took notice.
